Johannesburg, 25 February 2018 - Umoja, which means "unity" in Swahili, is quite literally a no-man's land. The matriarchal refuge is now home to the Samburu women who no longer want to suffer abuse like genital mutilation and forced marriages.

NAIROBI - The Umoja village in Kenya is regarded as a safe haven for the region's women.

Rebecca Lolosoli founded the village 25 years ago.

This safe haven helps to protect the Samburu women from abuse, genital mutilation and forced marriages.

Digital video channel Broadly's Michelle de Swarte documented the lives of these remarkable women.
