The Department of Women, Children and People with Disabilities was named in a petition last year as being responsible for not tackling problems facing women miners. Here is its response to questions from eNCA.com.
“…these are the instances why the department came up with WEGE (Women Empowerment and Gender Equality) Bill which when enacted, the department under the Minister’s leadership will have powers to make government and businesses account.
“We yesterday concluded the WEGE Bill consultations with women formations across the country and the parliament public participation will take place on 29-30 where the affected and interested will register their inputs. It is this process that will determine whether the bill gets enacted or not. We hope the process (will) go smoothly for as long as there is no Act that enforces WEGE, it will always be difficult for the department to take anyone to task.”
