WATCH: Comedy with an African flavour

JOHANNESBURG - Skhumba Hlophe is officially the funniest man in South Africa.

He was crowned the comic of the year in Johannesburg on Saturday night at the Savanna Comic's Choice Awards.

The yellow carpet was rolled out for the biggest event in South African comedy.

The Comic's Choice Awards brought out all the comedians, everyone from the new kids on the block, to the veterans.

Comic of the year nominee, Celeste Ntuli was representing the ladies.

She says she's proud of the strides made to have more female comedians.

The man of the moment, fresh from being named comic of the year, was struggling to express his emotions.

Other winners of the night included Thabiso Mhlongo for newcomer of the year, Loyiso Gola for the breakthrough award, and Ebenhaezer Dibakwane for the intermediate award

This year the awards had a new category, the Pan African comic of the year award - Nigeria's Bright 'Basketmouth' Okpocha took it home.

We spoke to a few of the African comedians nominated and asked them to share with us some of their favourite jokes back home.
