What natural disasters does household insurance cover?

JOHANNESBURG– According to an insurance broker, standard house insurance does typically cover natural disasters such as floods, fires, and hail storms. These do not fall into the high risk category.

However, Santam’s Donald Kau warns that when a region experiences repeated occurrences such as these, it can jeopardise household insurance cover.

Not only could an area be classified as a high risk, and insurance premiums be raised… but the worst can happen- cover can get withdrawn altogether.

Kau warns that some families in the Western Cape, affected by the latest fires, could find themselves in such a situation. This is because fires are common in the Western Cape around this time of the year.

The Cape fire destroyed at least eight houses in Noordhoek on Monday night. The blaze has damaged a total of 13 homes over the past three days.
