JOHANNESBURG - An armed robber was shot dead, two others were injured and a Sandton police officer was shot in the abdomen during a shootout on Rivonia Road in Johannesburg shortly after 1pm today.

Gauteng police spokesman Colonel Lungelo Dlamini said police officers from the Sandton station patrolling the Morningside area spotted four men in a car suspected to have been involved in an armed robbery earlier today.

Dlamini said armed robbers had targeted Avis car hire in Sandton City at about 8am today and made off with jewellery, cash and an iPhone.

According to Dlamini, the policemen tried to pull the car over, but the alleged robbers tried to flee and lost control of their car, colliding with another five vehicles in Rivonia Road, near the intersection of Outspan in Morningside.

The robbers opened fire on the police and a 43-year-old Warrant Officer from Sandton was shot in the abdomen. He was rushed to hospital.

Dlamini said police returned fire and one suspect was shot dead, two were injured and another was arrested on the scene. Three firearms were recovered from them.

Dlamini said detectives were investigating possible links between the suspects and armed robberies in the Sandton area.

He could not comment on allegations that a pregnant woman may also have been hurt in the incident.
