CAPE TOWN – Promises and Lies is an exhibition of photographs of the ANC taken between 1989 and 1990, which was a turning point in South African history.
These photographs of the ANC during that period offer an opportunity to think about lives in exile, the growing chasm between the promise of freedom and the reality of a contemporary moment marked by crisis and failure.
A photographic exhibition of the ANC in exile in Tanzania and Zambia will open at the Michaelis Gallery, UCT Hiddingh Campus, 31-37 Orange Street Cape Town on Thursday, May 12, 2016 at 6pm.
The exhibition has been conceptualised and curated by UCT academic Dr Siona O’Connell, director of the Centre for Curating the Archive at UCT, and shows for the first time images from award-winning reportage and cinema photographer, Laurie Sparham.
