Mother gets life for protecting child's rapist

File: A mother has been sentenced to life for aiding the rape of her two-month-old baby.

JOHANNESBURG - The South Gauteng High Court has sentenced a mother to life in prison after she protected her child's rapist.

The Soweto woman was found guilty of aiding a crime, defeating the ends of justice and instructing someone to commit rape.

The rape of the two-month-old happened two years ago.

The woman cannot be named, to protect the identity of her child.

The woman lied to police and medical officials, saying the infant had fallen off a bed.

It was later discovered the child’s genitals had been severely damaged. Traces of semen were detected.

The baby has undergone reconstructive surgery.

Teddy Bear Clinic director Shaheda Omar said the punishment fitted the crime.

"Actions have consequences and this type of conduct will not be tolerated".
