POLICE have launched an extensive manhunt for a group of over 20 men heavily armed who stormed into Carnival Casino, east of Johannesburg, during the early hours of Monday morning, wounding a security guard and a police officer.
The men entered the popular casino at around 1:30am and ordered the patrons to lie down before going to the vault.
It is believed the robbers used angle grinders and hammered the money box open before fleeing with the undisclosed amount of cash.
According to the police, the SAPS response team arrived at the scene when the robbers were about to make their get away.
A shoot out ensued and the security guard and police officer were wounded in the exchange of fire.
Later in the day, a white Toyota Hilux, believed to be the suspect's get-away vehicle was discovered at a filling station near Brakpan. Police say the Hilux was stolen last year in Douglasdale.
Police found equipment believed to have been used in the crime.
It is still unclear how many suspects were involved.
Some witnesses say the group numbered almost 20 while police say they’re looking for a group of around 15 suspects.
Police spokesperson, Captain Julia Classen said: "The bakkie had a grinder and live ammunition. It is in possession of the police and will from part of the investigation going forward.”
Crime scene experts remained on the scene while Ekhurleni metro police cordoned off the area.
