JOHANNESBURG – At least one suspect and two policemen have been wounded in a shootout with suspected hijackers at Kyalami Corner in Midrand, north of Johannesburg, on Tuesday morning.

Paramedics say an officer has been airlifted to hospital.

It's believed four suspects hijacked a police car in Bramley, near Sandton, taking an officer hostage before hijacking another car in Kyalami.

After police chased them down, a shootout ensued.

One suspect was wounded, one was arrested and two others fled the scene.

The entire complex has been placed on lockdown and shoppers have been advised to avoid the area altogether.

Police and paramedics earlier said one person had died but it has since emerged that nobody has.

This is a developing story
