Residents complain about troublesome toilets

April 27 - Residents of Khayelitsha in Cape Town have spent their Freedom Day fighting for better sanitation. Despite access to portable toilets, they say they would be better off without them. Residents say the toilets are unhygienic and unsafe.

Cape Town – Khayelitsha residents are complaining about state-provided toilets in their area.

Residents claim these mobile toilets pose serious health risks, they are too far from their homes and they are not safe for public use.

A local woman claims she was raped while walking towards these toilets.

“My wish is that we will get proper toilets. I am happy to be alive after what happened, but we are not safe,” said the 47-year-old woman.

The City of Cape Town has promised to investigate residents’ concerns.
