JOHANNESBURG - The pastor who feeds his congregation rats and snakes has seemingly disappeared.

The Commission for the Promotion and Protection of the Rights of Cultural, Religious and Linguistic Communities (CLR) is investigating the commercialisation of religion.

It's also probing abusive and exploitative practises in church, and is searching for Pastor Penuel Mnguni.

Pastor Lesego Daniel of the Rabboni Centre Ministries is one of several South African church leaders who have been summoned by the CLR Commission to explain their church practices,

Daniel is infamous for convincing his congregants to eat grass and drink petrol.

“The person we're looking for is pastor Mnguni, whose address cannot be verified," said CLR Commission chairman Thoko Mkhwanazi Xaluva.

"And as soon as we can verify his address, he'll also be here. We really mean business.”

Back on the streets, hundreds protested against the Commission, demanding it leaves their pastors alone.
