Thieves get away with school's tablets

Education officials are worried that their efforts to improve teaching and learning are being abused by criminals, after over 40 tablets were stolen from a school just outside Pretoria.

HAMMANSKRAAL - Thieves have dealt a blow to the Gauteng Education Department's attempts to improve teaching.

40 state-issued computer tablets have been stolen from a school in Hammanskraal outside Pretoria.

Six men allegedly broke into Steve Biko Secondary School and stole the tablets from a safe.

The theft has raised concern about safety in schools.

The pricey gadgets are part of the provinces move to paperless classrooms.

No arrests have been made and the tablets have not been found.

Police admit there’s an increase in criminals targeting computer equipment at schools.

Now the department wants to install trackers on all tablets.
