TANZANIA - The Trek4Mandela team is expected to begin its attempt to summit Mount Kilimanjaro on Friday.

The annual trek will raise funds to buy sanitary pads for underprivileged school girls.

eNCA executive producer Michael Marillier is part of the expedition and said everyone is thinking of the late Gugu Zulu as they embark on the mission.

The racing car driver died while climbing Kilimanjaro for the same trek in July last year.

His widow, Letshego, will take part in this year's expedition, saying she will climb in his honour.

She was speaking at a send-off at OR Tambo International Airport on Wednesday morning.

Among the 23 climbers is Chris Dippenaar, who is carrying his bicycle in his backpack.

He intends on cycling his way down in a bid to inspire South Africa's children.

The team hopes to summit on Tuesday as the world celebrates Mandela Day.
