CHRISTCHURCH - New Zealand defeated South Africa by six runs in the second one-day international in Christchurch on Wednesday to level the five-match series at 1-1.

The Black Caps set the Proteas a target of 290 -- after losing the toss and being sent into bat -- aided by an unbeaten 102 from Ross Taylor.

The tourists fell just short, making nine for 283 in reply, with Dwaine Pretorius's 26-ball half century a highlight.
