JOHANNESBURG - As Zimbabwe celebrates 41 years of independence on Sunday, the country has pardoned and started releasing over 3,000 prisoners under a presidential amnesty.

The release is to decongest the overcrowded prisons amid the coronavirus pandemic.

Zimbabwe's prison population stands at over 20,000 but has a holding capacity of only 17,000.

Prisons in the capital Harare have reported 173 COVID-19 infections and one death.

Zimbabwe has over 37,000 cases and just over 1,500 deaths.
