JOHANNESBURG – World champion, Caster Semenya cruised into the finals of the 1500m race to claim gold for South Africa.

Semenya set the Commonwealth Games record in 4:00.71 as well as SA&39;s national record.

She finished ahead of Kenya&39;s Beatrice Chepkoech, who took silver. Wales&39; Melissa Courtney took the bronze.

Her win brings SA&39;s medal tally to 21 -- 9 gold medals, 6 silver and 6 bronze medals respectively.

Meanwhile, South Africa is ranked 5th in the medal standings.
