Zimbabwe's currency shortages hitting retailers hard

JOHANNESBURG – Zimbabwe's largest food retailers are pleading with the reserve bank to address the country’s foreign currency shortages.

Pick n Pay and OK Zimbabwe said it is becoming impossible to buy imported goods from South Africa, Mozambique, and Zambia.

The central bank introduced local bond notes to fight the currency shortages.

Reserve Bank Governor John Mangudya said the bank is putting in place measures to avert food shortages. 

But, the retailers said stocks are low and will worsen if payments are not made for key products in the next few weeks.
