JOHANNESBURG - The Delta variant of COVID-19 has left a trail of destruction across the world and is responsible for Gauteng's rampant third wave of infections.

Caprisa Director, Professor Salim Abdool Karim, details what the Delta variant is, and why it is so contagious.

A total of 12,222 new COVID-19 infections were reported in the last 24 hours.

Gauteng accounts for just over 8,400 of them.

The National Institute for Communicable Diseases (NICD) said 138 more COVID-19 related deaths have also been recorded.

A total of 43,155 tests were conducted in the last 24 hours.
