Trade union Cosatu has hit back at Finance Minister Tito Mboweni’s remarks on wage increases at an investor conference.

JOHANNESBURG - Trade union Cosatu has hit back at Finance Minister Tito Mboweni’s remarks on wage increases at an investor conference.

Mboweni told delegates at the SA Tomorrow virtual gathering that any wage agreement for state workers must not breach the government’s fiscal ceiling.

Unions are demanding increases of inflation, which averaged 3 point percent last year, plus four percentage points.

They have threatened to strike.

But earlier this year, Mboweni announced a new three-year pay freeze in the public sector as part of plans to rein in government spending.
