JOHANNESBURG - More people are buying new cars.

The Automotive Business Council says this is both in the commercial and individual markets.

It says there was a significant increase in May, compared with the same period last year.

Over 38,000 vehicles were sold this May.

New passenger car sales increased by 169 percent.

Exports are also on the rise, increasing by over 67 percent year-on-year.

The biggest improvement was for extra-heavy trucks, where sales jumped 457 percent.
