JOHANNESBURG - Government will need to step in to relieve pressure on households struggling with the rising cost of living.
That's according to the Pietermaritzburg Economic Justice and Dignity Group.
South Africans are already struggling with unemployment and a declining economy.
The group is concerned that the war in Ukraine will make the situation even more dire.
"The most basic necessities are increasing way above the level of household income," the group's Mervyn Abrahams said.
"All these pressures plus the possibility of the war leading to higher fuel hikes and food prices... increased bread and flour prices. Households are under immense financial stress and government will have to come on board."
