JOHANNESBURG - The latest retail sales from Stats SA show that retail trade sales decreased by 9 percent year-on-year in July, mainly thanks to food, beverages and tobacco retail falling by over 18 percent.

Seasonally adjusted retail trade sales decreased by 1,1 percent in July 2020 compared to June.

This followed month-on-month changes of 6,6 percent in June 2020 and 68,8 percent in May 2020.

The numbers do show that despite retrenchments and consumers earning a lower income, they did spend time shopping online for everyday essential items.

That contributed to a less significant seasonal drop.
