SA maize production at critical level

JOHANNESBURG - South Africa could be forced to import maize at exorbitant prices if droughts continue to persist.

Maize production is at a critical level in the two maize-producing provinces of North West and Free State, producing 72 percent of the total white maize harvest in the country. 

And with virtually no crops planted and the optimum planting date having passed, this will pose a problem. 

CEO of Grain SA, Jannie de Villiers, said traders have indicated that they will import maize.
