JOHANNESBURG - Tourism accommodation figures remained dismal in July despite South Africans being allowed to holiday in the own province.
Tourism has been the sector hardest hit by COVID-19.
Total income for the tourist accommodation industry decreased by 88 percent in July compared to the same period last year.
The month before it was 95 percent in the red.
But with inter-provincial travel now allowed and restrictions on international travellers eased as of the first of next month, fortunes could be set for improvement.
Tourism contributes about 8 percent to the country’s GDP.
