JOHANNESBURG - Africa’s biggest insurer Sanlam says it's preparing for the fifth wave of coronavirus infections.

It said it's setting aside three times more in capital than it normally would.

Releasing its annual results, Sanlam said its operational performance has been restored to pre-pandemic levels.

The insurer paid out R22-billion in death claims to clients last year as the pandemic toll worsened, up 76 percent on the previous year.

Sanlam says despite a lull in infections, the risk of a fifth wave is real.
