JOHANNESBURG - Exercise caution and take care of your property as though you were not insured, that's the advice from the Short-term insurance ombudsman.

More and more vehicle insurance claims are being turned down due to the ‘reasonable precautions’ clause in policies.

Ombudsman Peter Nkhuna explains the clause.

"The ‘reasonable precautions’ clause is a provision in our policies in terms of which the insured is required to take reasonable precaution to prevent damage.

"One should behave in a reasonable manner and  take care of ones property as if they were not insured. If you behave in that manner you’ll basically comply with the provision on the policy.”
