JOHANNESBURG - Vinpro, which represents South Africa's wine producers, is taking the government to court over the latest alcohol sales ban.

It applied on Tuesday for an urgent interim interdict to lift the ban on the sale of wine in the Western Cape.

The matter is expected to be heard on Friday.

The latest two-week ban on alcohol sales follows 19 weeks of revenue loss in the wine and tourism sector.

Vinpro says it and its industry partners made submissions to the National Coronavirus Command Council over the weekend.

They suggested specific interventions that would ensure a balanced approach to curb the spread of COVID-19 and keep the economy afloat.

But Vinpro says the government failed to take these suggestions into account.
