Posted on: Fri 28 Aug 2015

e.tv continues to grow from strength to strength. South Africa's only Free-To-Air commercial television channel was named amongst the best entertainment brands in local television this week.

The channel ranked second in the 2015 Sunday Times Top Brands TV Service  Provider category. The 17th annual Sunday Times Top Brands survey results were announced at the Maslow Hotel in Sandton on Tuesday, 25 August.

Sunday Times Top Brands celebrates South Africa’s best known and loved brands.  The method used to measure the brands is guided by an assessment of the brand’s penetration in the marketplace while also examining its relative strength amongst its users and its relative attraction amongst non-users. The awards range across a number of product categories and industries including: cellphones, telecommunications, TV service providers and tablets.

“We are humbled and delighted by the affirmation the brand has received in the Sunday Times Top Brands survey. This speaks volumes about the quality of work the e.tv team and its production partners have made over the last six months. We remain committed to continue to invest in local content that resonates with television audiences across all genres.  It is a clear indication that the brand has and still continues to make a significant impact in showcasing diversity and serving South Africans. We value our viewers’ relentless loyalty to the brand, “says MD of e.tv Channels, Monde Twala

The survey comes after the channel programming revamp that saw the introduction of some of the TV industry’s most innovative local productions. The lively prime time line-up included telenovelas, local crime dramas, gritty riveting rural dramas and youthful chat shows brought by some of the most talented players in the industry.   The channel revamp secured great viewer participation, generating a full spectrum of favourable opinions, perspectives and comments across various media platforms.

e.tv’s sister company OpenView HD, took seventh position in the same Sunday Times Top Brands TV Service Provider category. The platform, which is on the cusp of reaching 200 000 subscribers, continues to grow and is fast entrenching its position in the industry.

“We are excited to see that South Africa has responded positively to the OpenView HD offering.   The channel’s steady growth indicates that South Africans appreciate free, quality multi-channel satellite television.   OpenView HD is an accessible platform that speaks to the interests of all South Africans, it boasts quality international and local content which gives recognition to proudly South African productions and local talent.  The Sunday Times  Top Brands recognition shows that the nation is receptive to the idea that all South Africans are deserving of free quality satellite TV,” says, Maxwell Nonge, MD at Platco Digital.

“I want to thank and congratulate all our committed staff and teams at both e.tv and Platco for the hard work and dedication to  the e.tv and Openview HD brands, which have enabled us to obtain this achievement in the Sunday Times Survey” said Group Chief Operating Officer, Mark Rosin.

This is how the Sunday Times Top Consumer Brands Survey is done:

The total sample for 2015 is 3493, with 2500 interviews in metro SA and 993 interviews in non-metro areas of SA. They talked to adults aged 18 years and the final results were weighted to represent the population according to StatsSA 2014 mid-year population estimates.  The study is representative of all adults across the country and is a relatively large sample in consumer research terms.  Interviews were conducted in home, face to face.
