JOHANNESBURG - A musical tribute to the legends of local music is making a strong showing for song of the year.

Many are convinced that Asphelelanga could be a contender for the top prize.

While the track is festive, the lyrics show a deeper meaning.

The song pays homage to local music legends who inspired the next generation.
 
It pays tribute to fallen music icons such as Lebo Mathosa, Brenda Fassie and Hugh Masekela.

Asphelelanga is loosely translated as "we are not all here" and it references music legends who have died.

The song features poet Jessica Mbageni.

Vusi Nova says he was surprised when the song blew up the way it did.

He is set to record a maskandi remix of the song.

With the recent passing of HHP, fans have been requesting that he include the late rapper's name to the tribute.

For the music video, he invited his friends who are in the entertainment industry to help him celebrate.

The song is off his new offering Manyan Nyan which has reached platinum status.
