LOS ANGELES - Mexican filmmaker Guillermo del Toro's fantastical romance "The Shape of Water" won the Oscar for Best Picture.
The filmmaker earlier won the best director Oscar.
"The Shape of Water" was hit with a plagiarism lawsuit last month that alleged its plot was lifted directly from a 1969 American stage play.
Del Toro, who also wrote the screenplay, said he had never seen or read the play.
The movie about a mute cleaning woman who falls in love with a strange river creature had gone into the ceremony with a leading 13 nominations and won a total of four Academy Awards.
