Oranges litter the street after the traditional 'battle of the oranges' as part of last year's carnival in Ivrea, near Turin, on February 26, 2017.

IVREA, Italy – The annual Battle of the Oranges is underway in northern Italy.

The three-day carnival sees participants divided into two groups – commoners on foot and guards of the medieval lords in carriages.

They then see red as they pelt each other with more than 500 tons of oranges.
