From the brink of closure to fine dining and fantasy cakes

Who would have thought that a small coffee shop on the brink of closure, would turn into an affordable fine dining bistro, with a cutting-edge patisserie? This was the case for Café Hemingways thanks to one man who had a passion for people and upskilling. Video: eNCA

JOHANNESBURG - From the moment you step into Café Hemingway's, you will be transported through time to an era when live saxophonists were the main attraction in dimly lit bistros on the streets of New York. But, you don’t have to hop on a 17-hour flight to experience something like this.

Café Hemingway's is nestled in a small shopping centre in Kyalami, Johannesburg, and its unique style, décor and menu offer an escape from the bustling Johannesburg lifestyle. However, this was not always the case.

Hemingway's has come a long, long way in its two-and-a-half year existence, thanks to the upskilling initiatives of one man who saved the jobs of several people, and created even more.

Watch the video above to see how the bistro evolved from a small coffee shop on the brink of closure, to one of Johannesburg’s most unique, cutting-edge restaurants and patisseries.
