LOS ANGELES - Kevin Hart has stepped down as host of the 2019 Oscars.

The comedian and actor made the announcement on Twitter on Thursday after his past anti-gay comments resurfaced.

"I have made the choice to step down from hosting this year's Oscar's ... this is because I do not want to be a distraction on a night that should be celebrated by so many amazing talented artists," he tweeted.

Hart earlier in the week said he was named as the host for the 2019 Academy Awards.
