CAPE TOWN - The tourism industry has suffered one setback after the other since the outbreak of the coronavirus.

However, one enterprising hotelier in Khayelitsha was not going to let lockdown delays hold her back from realising her dream of running a luxury hotel in the heart of a township.

The Spade Hotel and Spa in Mandela Park opens its doors to visitors for the very first time.

The 13 suite boutique hotel is just about ready to welcome its first guests.

Bookings are streaming in for this luxury accommodation spot or the spa and event facilities.

It is all the brainchild of local businesswoman, Annette Skaap, and each detail and special touch is intentionally placed.

The former flight attendant says her dream was to bring a touch of opulence to the township.

It has been a tough week for the local tourism industry amid travel bans, canceled holiday reservations and the threat of a fourth of COVID-19.

Undeterred by the potential challenges, the budding hotelier hopes to cement her high-end offering as a favourite among domestic travellers first.
