NEW YORK - Meghan Markle's inner circle stepped out of the Mark Hotel into a rainy Manhattan on Wednesday after attending a baby shower for the Duchess of Sussex.

Human rights lawyer,Amal Clooney led the group past news cameras and paparazzi.

The Daily Mail reported tennis legend Serena Williams and Clooney were hosting a baby shower in Meghan's honour in the Mark's penthouse, which runs $75,000 (R1-million) per night. The hotel says the suite's 929 square meters makes it the largest hotel penthouse in the country.

Markle is expecting her first child with Britain's Prince Harry in the spring. Her appearance in New York City for the apparent baby shower was first reported by Harper's Bazaar magazine, which cited unnamed sources.

It was the first trip back to the United States by the American former actress since her marriage to Harry at a celebrity-filled ceremony at Windsor Castle last May.

Harry is Queen Elizabeth's grandson and sixth in line to the British throne.

Kensington Palace declined to comment on the reports that the duchess was attending the gift-giving party to celebrate her baby's upcoming arrival.

She was seen stepping out of the luxury hotel in Manhattan on Tuesday afternoon.

Markle and Harry are due to visit Morocco from 23 to 25 February on an official trip.
