Porsche is definitely developing new 4-cylinder engines, according to company CEO Matthias Mueller.

Mueller reportedly told Europe’s Automotive News that the smallest Porsche engine will be installed in the next-generation Cayman and Boxster, both of which are due out in 2017.

Nothing much was said in terms of details, except that maximum power will go up to around 280kW or so.

Pundits are speculating that the engine will be either the Volkswagen Group’s 2.0-litre found in the likes of Golf R.

Alternatively since this is Porsche, a boxer type plant could be issued.

Although the new small engine would initially power the Cayman and Boxster, other models could also benefit from it.

Already Porsche sells a baseline Macan with a 2.0-litre 4-cylinder turbo with 174kW and 350Nm in the United Kingdom.
