JOHANNESBURG - South African passport holders can now visit at least 100 countries without obtaining prior visas.

The South African passport has moved up one place to 53rd position on the Henley Passport Index.

The index is based on exclusive data from the International Air Transport Association.

The data reflects a similar slight upwards shift for many other Sub-Saharan African states, as most countries on the continent move to liberalise their visa regimes.

The latest countries to relax their visa requirements are Namibia and Sierra Leone.

Both countries now offer visas on arrival to a number of African states.
