School violence a reflection of society: expert

Clinical psychologist Gerard Labuschagne said violence in schools is understandable when considering that schools are a microcosm of society.

JOHANNESBURG - Apart from sexual assault, there has been an increase in the number of stabbings, fights and other violence at schools.

Some of the incidents have been fatal.

Clinical psychologist Gerard Labuschagne said violence in schools is understandable when considering that schools are a microcosm of society.

Since South African society has high rates of interpersonal violence, it is reflected in schools.

Labuschagne cautioned against a punitive attitude and zero-tolerance policies which may prevent reporting of offences.
