Former petrol attendant prepares for big US break

JOHANNESBURG - Sonwabile Gingqishe's evolution from a petrol attendant in Fort Beaufort to an actor training in New York is an inspirational tale.

Gingqishe is excited about being at the New York Film Academy after being awarded a scholarship by Hollywood star, Tyler Perry.

He recounted overcoming poverty, distance, and isolation to audition in Johannesburg before being asked to represent the country in the United States.

Gingqishe's colleagues at the Sasol Garage were with him every step of the way asking for donations. He was sponsored only eight days before his departure for the States.

He is currently saving while working fulltime as a talent scout and actor to afford the additional costs of studying abroad now that he has been awarded the partial scholarship.
