RICHARDS BAY - A 100-year-old Kwa-Zulu Natal woman who defied the odds and beat COVID19 has finally been vaccinated.
Gogo Chitekile Hlabisa received her first jab as part of the phase two vaccination rollout.
She joins over 1.5-million people countrywide who have received the jab.
“I thought I had flu, but then I was told that I have this virus. I went to hospital, but God spared my life and I was able to come out alive,” says the centenarian.
She is urging others to go for the prick.
“I was scared before, but officials explained the virus to me and I decided to take it. Those who are scared should not be, they should get vaccinated,” she says
Gogo Hlabisa contracted COVID-19 during the second wave.
One of the infected children sadly passed away.
Her grandson, Bongani Mtshadi, says the journey to recovery has been a tough one.
Umhlathuze has 18 vaccination sites. The mayor says they are visiting different areas encouraging elderly citizens to get vaccinated.
Gogo Hlabisa says adherence to protocols is imperative.
