'We are the perpetrators': Men's Conference co-founder speaks out

JOHANNESBURG - As violence and abuse against women and children continue to rise in the country, South African men are coming together to help fight the scourge.

The Men's Conference will be held in Pretoria on Saturday seeking to find solutions to deal with the crisis.

Hector "Motivator" Mathabe will be speaking at the event.

Kagiso Dipotelo, the co-founder of the initiative, said South African men must take responsibility to confront gender-based violence

The conference hosted by the Sidwell Phutheho Empowerment Foundation will be held on 9 November.

Dipotelo said, "we are the perpetrators, as men, as head of the families we need to do something."

Those involved the event have admitted where they have contributed to gender-based violence.

Mathabe confessed his own history of domestic violence, saying he had assaulted a previous girlfriend and realised he needed to change.

Mathabe said witnessing violence against women within his home and community taught him to treat women badly.
