DRC conflict | Families prepare to bury fallen soldiers

PRETORIA - Families of the 14 fallen soldiers who died in the DRC are preparing to bury them after their remains were handed over on Thursday night.

President Cyril Ramaphosa commended their bravery and hailed them as heroes.

He also thanked the countries that helped South Africa bring back its fallen soldiers.

The group were part of a peacekeeping mission when they came under attack.

Garth Benneyworth, a defence observer from Sol Plaatje University, said the SANDF has been involved in the DRC for a long time under various different mandates.

He said the situation currently in Goma is unclear.
