MAHIKENG - A four-year-old boy has drowned in a sewage drain at a school in Mahikeng.

The boy's father said they tried to save him, but it was too late.

The parents of the child said he was playing with friends when he disappeared.

He was later found dead after falling into an uncovered sewage drain on the premises of Sejankabo Secondary School and drowning.

Olebogeng Emmanuel Makaudi, the boy's father, said "kids will always be kids. When they go out to play you can't really monitor their movements because they play in the yard.

"They suddenly disappeared around about their bath time. Later, two of the children came running to report that one of them had fallen into the drainage system.

"My mother even tried to get into the sewage drain to save the boy, but, she just could not get inside."

He said police arrived after at the scene and took over the rescue efforts.
