Mashaba given deadline to respond to Alex issues

Alexandra protestors maintain the shutdown in Alexandra will continue.

JOHANNESBURG - The Alex Shutdown Committee says they will continue with peaceful protests until they hear back from Johannesburg mayor Herman Mashaba.

Mashaba has 14 days to respond to issues detailed in a memorandum that was handed over to him on Monday night.

Mashaba was booed and heckled by Alex residents when he went to meet them.

The Marlboro Community Hall was packed to capacity but a continuing barrage of insults hurled at Mashaba resulted in the meeting ending prematurely.

The ANC has since been accused of deploying members to purposefully disrupt the gathering.

Committee spokesperson Bobby Solomons said, "as the committee, the whole process was a community initiative, if there are members of political organisations or not we can't really chase people away.

"They are also residents of Alex, they wanted to be part of the initiative."

The residents are still engaged in a shutdown but Solomons said the details of the plans for protest action would not be released.
