JOHANNESBURG - The Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union said it will oppose any retrenchments by Sibanye-Stillwater on Wednesday.

The union stated it is still studying the notice of intention to cut more than 5,000 jobs.

The company is embarking on a restructuring exercise at its loss-making Marikana mine.

Amcu said the notice shows the principle of profit over people.

It said the union will spare no resource to ensure workers' job security.

Sibanye-Stillwater took control of the embattled mine earlier this year in the hopes of turning it around.
