Deputy secretary-general, Jessie Duarte says the aim is to have communities select candidates they’re connected to.

Duarte says this is a true component of the Freedom Charter.

"We decided to have internal elections, primary's internally, it was an internal mechanism that we chose for ourselves whereby we made sure that communities were able to participate in the selection of a candidate that they could work with and that they knew," she said.
