POLOKWANE - ANC leaders in Limpopo are claiming to be united ahead of the divisive provincial congress that’s starting on Friday in Polokwane.

Stan Mathabatha seeks re-election for a third term as provincial chairperson but he faces a tough contest from Public Works MEC Dickson Masemola.

Of the four officials who briefed journalists about the readiness of this weekend’s provincial conference, only provincial secretary Soviet Lekganyane is in the slate that’s led by Dr Dickson Masemola, who seeks to dethrone Mathabatha from the top position.

Despite all these, Mathabatha says they’re all pulling together.

"We’re ready as a united force, you can see we’re united, there are no divisions, there are no factions here, we’re united all of us, we’re preparing this conference being together,” he said.

ANC Limpopo's Provincial Secretary Soviet Lekganyane said, "the elections have become a very important aspect of our lives, we acknowledge the ANC is experiencing electoral decline, that is why we now want conferences of the ANC to discuss elections so that when we reach 2024, the year of jubilee democracy, SA must still be led by the ANC.”

The party says by Saturday, delegates would’ve elected new provincial leaders, and party President Cyril Ramaphosa will deliver closing remarks on Sunday.
