POLOKWANE - The ANC in Limpopo is going ahead with its plans to prepare for the provincial conference, scheduled to take place this weekend despite the threat of legal action to interdict the gathering by some unhappy members.

Those aggrieved say their disputes haven't been resolved ahead of the conference.

Some branches want a re-run of their branch general meetings as they allege irregularities and manipulation of processes - including in the influential Peter Mokaba regional conference last year.

The leadership of the ANC in the powerful and influential Peter Mokaba region has hit back at the Provincial Secretary, Soviet Lekaganyane over the December 2021 regional conference.

Some branches are unhappy with the way the conference was convened and have launched disputes with the party’s provincial and national dispute resolution committees.

But, the majority of these disputes remain unresolved.

"It is only now after five months that the matters that were raised are being attended to when the conference is passed and this puts serious questions about the legitimacy of such a conference and that is basically why I am outspoken even when I am at the scaffold with my head about to be chopped. I will still say that the conference was irregularly convened. As to whether it was legitimate, it's not for me to make a call,” ANC Limpopo provincial secretary Soviet Lekganyane said.

The Peter Mokaba regional leadership has accused Lekganyane of having an agenda ahead of the provincial conference.

ANC Peter Mokaba Regional chair John Mpe said: "How do you then, six months later, with a week left towards the provincial conference, start to disown a duly elected structure?”

Lekganyane says he’s raising the issue now because he’s trying to avoid the provincial conference being interdicted or nullified.

He said, "I am raising it now because the conference is approaching and as the provincial secretary with a living memory, I’ve seen conferences being set aside in KZN and the Free State recently.

"It’s not a good thing to happen for the organisation. So, I want everybody to know even before the conference that the provincial secretary of the ANC in Limpopo raised these matters, in the organisation, with the affected comrades, even today we are having a PEC meeting. The PEC knows that this is a matter it has to deal with because we want to convene a clean and credible conference that is what we are all about. It’s not about who is going to stand for election.”

However, the Peter Mokaba regional leadership is not buying Lekganyana’s move.

Mpe said, "his bizarre utterances are not only shocking but divisive and are heel burnt on a cheap attempt to weaken the region towards the provincial conference."

The political tensions point to a divided ANC in the province ahed of a crucial conference that may be plagued by serious challenges over credentials, possible delays due to disputes and even court action.
