PRETORIA - The Tshwane mayor has hit back at Justice Minister Michael Masutha regarding the closure of the Correctional Services headquarters in Pretoria.

Solly Msimanga stands by his decision to shut down the Poyntons building for safety reasons.

Msimanga said the 32-storey building has no water for firefighting inside, and that there's no operational smoke detection and alarm system.

On Wednesday, Masutha threatened to take Msimanga to court and said the mayor should've considered the dire consequences of closing the nerve centre of the Justice Department.

But Msimanga said the city previously gave the department two years to fix up the building to no avail.
