CAPE TOWN - A national anthem is supposed to unite people, not divide them.

These were the words of Danie van Wyk, who's an activist with the Dak Netwerk.

He agrees that Die Stem should be removed from the national anthem.

Van Wyk said: "We feel that Afrikaans should not be omitted from a national anthem. But, take for instance Nkosi Sikelel'iAfrica it was also translated into Afrikaans and into English.

"My suggestion would be to make the Afrikaans section... instead of continuing utilising Die Stem as part of the national anthem. Because it's obvious that that part of the national anthem alienates and divides most of of the South Africans."
